The Ruapehu district is landlocked and includes the Tongariro National Park's western half, which includes Mount Ruapehu and the western flanks of Mount Ngauruhoe and Mount Tongariro, as well as a portion of the Whanganui National Park. On the North Island Main Trunk railway line, the neighbourhood is also home to the world-famous Raurimu Spiral.
Raetihi, Whakapapa Village, National Park, and Ohakune are tourist settlements near Mount Ruapehu in the district's south east. The massive Waiouru Army Camp is located in the extreme southeast of the area, at an elevation of 815 metres. From Waiouru to Rangipo, the district's southern section of State Highway 1's famed Desert Road stretch traverses through it.
