Making a difference where it matters most

When the community comes together, amazing things can happen - and this year’s Melbourne Cup Long Lunch at the Silks Lounge was living proof of that. In association with Property Brokers and The Grassroots Trust Rescue Helicopter, the sold-out event combined fun, fashion, and fundraising to raise an extraordinary $165,847 for the life-saving helicopter service.

Guests enjoyed a two-course buffet lunch while soaking up the excitement of the Melbourne Cup races broadcast live on the big screens. The atmosphere was electric - full of laughter, friendly competition, and the unmistakable buzz of generosity that filled the room.

The day featured plenty of highlights, from the elegant Fashion in the Field competition to a thrilling live auction, where local businesses and individuals bid enthusiastically in support of a cause that touches countless lives across the region.

Property Brokers’ Regional Director for Manawatu, Whanganui and Taranaki, Paul Roache, said the event showcased the best of what community spirit can achieve.

“The Grassroots Trust Rescue Helicopter is a critical service that responds to emergencies across our communities every day. We’re incredibly proud to support an event that not only celebrates the Melbourne Cup in style but makes such a tangible difference to people in need.”

The funds raised will directly support The Grassroots Trust Rescue Helicopter’s vital missions, helping ensure it can continue to provide rapid emergency response and medical care when every second counts.

For Sharni Weir, Head of Fundraising and Marketing for The Grassroots Trust Rescue Helicopter, the community’s generosity means everything.

“With over 400 jobs a year, we’re incredibly busy in the rescue helicopter world. Every time you see the helicopter take off, that flight costs around $9,500. We’re humbled by the generosity shown by everyone who attended. Every dollar raised helps us deliver critical care, keep flying, and continue responding when people need us most. We couldn’t do it without the incredible support of our community and partners like Property Brokers.”

From sponsors to volunteers and everyone who attended, the event was a shining example of heartland generosity and teamwork in action. “It was a memorable day filled with fun, laughter, and purpose,” Paul said. “Seeing the community come together for such an important cause is truly inspiring.”
