How Storm Harris succeeded in property investment after a career-ending injury

In her mid-twenties, Storm Harris has made a significant mark in New Zealand's property investment scene. Her journey is far from conventional, characterised by resilience, determination, and an unyielding spirit. From representing New Zealand in a tetrathlon to overcoming a career-ending injury, Storm's story is an inspiring testament to turning adversity into opportunity.

Her journey began in the competitive world of equestrian sports. As a New Zealand representative, she travelled to Ireland, excelling in the demanding tetrathlon. However, her equestrian dreams came to an abrupt halt due to a devastating accident. She suffered a compressed spine, eight cracked ribs, a sprained shoulder, a cracked pelvis, a split liver and spleen, a broken nose and eye socket, a concussion, and punctured lungs. This catalogue of injuries would have deterred many, but Storm's resolve remained unshaken.

Despite her severe injuries, Storm channeled her determination into a new venture: property investment. At just 20 years old, against the advice of many, she purchased her first property - a set of rundown flats.

"A lot of people told me not to touch them," Storm recalls. "But my mum said, do it. You are young enough to go broke and start again if it doesn't work."

Storm's commitment to her dream was unwavering. She adhered to a strict budget, often living off minimal food and even spending nights in her car. Her perseverance paid off, transforming the once-dilapidated flats into her stepping stone into the world of real estate.

Her success with her first property caught the attention of her real estate agent, who told her about a position as a property manager with Property Brokers. "The knowledge I gained was extremely valuable," Storm says. This new role allowed her to expand her expertise and continue growing her property portfolio. "After buying the first house, it was a lot easier to buy the next two," she explains. "Now I am pre-approved to buy another property, which will be two dwellings on one title, the same as the first flats I bought."

Storm's story is not just about financial success; it's about prioritising and making sacrifices for what truly matters. "It is all about prioritising what is most important to you. Being financially secure was important to me, so I minimised partying, followed budgets, and worked hard. Now, I can look back and see that the hard work has paid off. "As a property manager with Property Brokers, Storm brings her real-world experience to her clients. They are dealing with a proven investor who understands the challenges and triumphs of the property market. Her journey from a young athlete to a seasoned property investor is a powerful reminder that age is not a barrier to success.

Looking ahead to purchasing her fifth investment property, Storm's journey demonstrates that with determination, resilience, and a clear vision, getting on the property ladder at a young age is not only possible but can lead to remarkable success. Storm Harris's story proves that even in adversity, one can rise, rebuild, and achieve greatness. Her journey is a testament to the power of perseverance and the limitless possibilities that await those who dare to dream and work relentlessly towards their goals.

Storm's journey from equestrian dreams to property investment success serves as an inspiration to many. Her ability to overcome immense challenges and emerge stronger is a powerful reminder of the strength of the human spirit. For those considering entering the property market, Storm's story offers a blueprint for success: unwavering determination, strategic planning, and a relentless pursuit of one's dreams.
