There are moments in every company's history that remind you what truly matters. For Property Brokers, our recent Nexus Conference in Wellington was one of them. More than 600 people from across Property Brokers Country came together to learn, celebrate and look ahead.
Salespeople, property managers, support teams, leaders and specialists from both the North and South Islands filled the room, united by something that has defined Property Brokers since the very beginning - people.
As we celebrate our 40th birthday this year, Nexus became much more than an annual conference. It became a celebration of the relationships, values and shared purpose that have shaped our business over four decades.
One of the most memorable moments came away from the conference sessions, as we welcomed around 40 former Property Brokers team members and long-standing professional partners to a special dinner. Many have been part of the Property Brokers story for decades. Some helped build the business in its earliest years. Others have stood alongside us as trusted partners, supporting our people and our clients through changing markets, evolving technology and countless milestones.
It was an evening filled with stories, laughter, memories and genuine gratitude. Addressing the room, founder Tim Mordaunt reflected on a journey that began in Palmerston North in 1986 with a simple belief that real estate is, and always will be, a people business.
He spoke about the countless individuals who have shaped Property Brokers over the past 40 years, acknowledging that while buildings, branding and technology have evolved, it is the people who have built the company into what it is today.
"There are so many people who have helped shape this business over the years," Tim said. "Some are still with us today, others have gone on to new chapters, but every one of them has left their mark. Property Brokers has never been about one person. It's been built by people who cared about each other, cared about their communities and cared about doing the right thing."
That sense of continuity was made even more meaningful as Tim reflected on the next generation of leadership. Watching his sons, Managing Director Guy Mordaunt and Marketing Manager Tony Mordaunt, help lead the business into its next chapter is a source of enormous pride. For Tim, seeing the values that founded Property Brokers continue to guide the company today is perhaps the greatest milestone of all.
Earlier this year, Tim reflected on what has mattered most throughout the company's journey. "It's never been about being the biggest," he said. "It's been about building something we're proud to put our name to. Looking after our people, serving our communities and earning the trust of our clients every single day."
Those same values continue to shape Property Brokers today. While the business has grown from one provincial office to a nationwide team spanning more than 85 locations, the culture remains remarkably familiar. Relationships come first. Success is shared. Communities remain at the heart of every decision.
That spirit was evident throughout the Nexus Conference. The conversations between colleagues. The celebration of achievements. The exchange of ideas. The warm welcome extended to those who helped write earlier chapters of the Property Brokers story.
Looking around the room, it was impossible not to appreciate how many people have contributed to making Property Brokers what it is today.
Forty years is an incredible milestone. But what made this celebration truly special wasn't simply the anniversary. It was the opportunity to thank the people who have walked alongside us, recognise those who continue to shape our future, and celebrate the relationships that have always been at the heart of Property Brokers.
Because while businesses evolve, one thing has never changed. Property Brokers has always been, and always will be, about people.
