One day, families are going about their normal routines. The next, homes are damaged, roads are cut off, and people are left trying to navigate uncertainty, displacement, and loss.
In those moments, practical support matters. But so does compassion.
That is why New Zealand’s Temporary Accommodation Service (TAS) plays such an important role in helping people access safe, temporary accommodation while they begin to rebuild their lives. And it is why, at Property Brokers, we feel incredibly privileged to support that work alongside government agencies, local communities, iwi, marae, and emergency response teams across the country.
Since being awarded the TAS contract, our teams have worked with families impacted by severe weather events and civil defence emergencies throughout regional New Zealand. But this work has never felt like a transaction or simply another part of property management. It is deeply human work.
Behind every placement is a person, a couple, or a family going through one of the most difficult periods of their lives. Some have lost homes filled with memories built over decades. Others have been displaced suddenly, unsure of what comes next or when life may return to normal.
Recently, following an urgent government request for support in the Bay of Plenty, Property Brokers rallied a team to help deliver campervans into remote parts of the region to provide emergency accommodation for displaced families. The task involved long hours, difficult conditions, and rapidly changing circumstances. But throughout the response, the focus remained firmly on the people who needed help most.
That is something we have seen time and time again through this work. When communities are hurting, people step up.
Local iwi and marae continue to play an extraordinary role during emergencies, opening their doors, supporting whānau, and helping provide shelter, connection, and care when it is needed most. We are proud to stand alongside those wider support networks as part of a collective effort to help communities through incredibly challenging times.
For our teams, support does not stop once accommodation is secured. The process is often ongoing and emotional, requiring regular communication, coordination, reassurance, and eventually helping families transition back into their homes as recovery work progresses.
What has left the biggest impression on many within Property Brokers has been the resilience shown by the people affected. Even while facing enormous uncertainty, displaced families continue to show remarkable patience, gratitude, and strength.
As weather-related events become more frequent across New Zealand, the demand for coordinated support like TAS is only expected to grow. Property Brokers currently manages around 35 active occupancies through the service, with teams remaining ready to respond wherever needed.
For us, this work reflects the same values Property Brokers was built on more than 40 years ago. Showing up for people. Supporting communities. Doing the right thing when it matters most.
