Otago and Southland continue to cement their reputation as two of New Zealand's strongest rural property markets, with buyer confidence remaining high and demand building across a range of farming sectors.
During the 2025/26 season, the Property Brokers Otago and Southland rural team completed close to $300 million in rural real estate transactions, reinforcing the region's importance as one of the company's key rural markets.
The confidence we're seeing on the ground is reflected in the latest independent market data. REINZ reports that national dairy farm sales increased by 38.2% over the year to March 2026, with Otago and Southland identified among the country's most active dairy regions.
Strong commodity prices, improved farmgate returns and healthier farm balance sheets have all contributed to renewed confidence across the rural sector. ANZ's latest Agri Focus report paints a similar picture, noting that lower interest rates, strong dairy payouts and improved profitability are encouraging farmers to invest with confidence.
At the same time, Rabobank's Rural Confidence Survey found rural sentiment has remained net positive for seven consecutive quarters, driven largely by optimism within the dairy sector. These conditions continue to attract buyers from across New Zealand and beyond.
Farmers and investors recognise the long-term value, productivity and opportunity that Otago and Southland offer, making the region an attractive destination for those looking to invest in quality farming assets.
As momentum builds, we're seeing healthy enquiry across multiple farm types, with a strong pipeline of new listings expected throughout late winter and into spring.
