Hamilton Central, located on the Waikato River, is a thriving shopping district. Because of the high student population, the entertainment area is quite lively. "The city's main strip has spawned a sophisticated and energetic stretch of bars and cafes that, on the weekend at least, leave Auckland's Viaduct Harbour for dead in the boozy fun stakes," according to the 2008 Lonely Planet book. The ancient Town Belt is home to many of the city's events and attractions, including Hamilton Gardens, Waikato Stadium, Seddon Park, and the Hamilton Lake Domain.
Hamilton has two institutes of higher education, the University of Waikato and the Waikato Institute of Technology, both of which are vital to the city (Wintec). Much of New Zealand's agricultural innovation has stemmed from research conducted at the Ruakura research sites. Because of its location in the heart of New Zealand's greatest dairying region, the dairy sector is Hamilton's primary source of revenue.
The National Agricultural Field days at Mystery Creek, the southern hemisphere's largest agricultural trade show, is held every year in Hamilton. In addition, festival One music festival, the National Car Show, and the National Boat Show are all held in Mystery Creek, the country's largest event centre.
